DANCE CLASSES

JAZZ

Was once considered any style of dance that could be performed to Jazz music. As dance has evolved with the times, this genre has changed greatly. Jazz has been molded to fit hard hitting or upbeat music and is recognizable by the use of technique with a ballet base.

COMMERCIAL

A blend of all styles, the most recent style of dance created- allowing the choreographer/teacher complete freedom of movement, usually with attitude and style at the forefront.

HIP HOP

This dance genre was cultivated initially outside of dance studios alongside Hip Hop music and culture. Hip Hop spread like wildfire as a result of it being the primary choreographed style for music videos and other commercial appearances. The entertainment aspect of Hip Hop has made it a most popular genre outside of the dance world. Ever evolving, it takes us on a journey at a pace like no other.

BALLET

Ballet is known as the building block of all dance and is characterized by fluid and precise movements done in “turned out” positions. This graceful, meticulous art form is spoken in French and is considered the foundational style of all dance technique.

CONTEMPORARY

As dance styles have rapidly progressed and dancers have been exposed to various choreography styles, elements from Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, and Ballet have merged together to form Contemporary. Defined by changes in musicality and emotion driven performances, Contemporary has become a most diverse dance style

SALSA

There are generally two different meanings.  There is social Latin dancing, and there’s formal ballroom/Latin dancing.  Formal Latin dancing has five dances: cha-cha, jive, paso doble, rumba and samba.  When you see an international Latin or American Latin dance competition, these are the dances they are doing.

Then there’s social Latin dancing.  This is what most people are doing in a dance clubs, what you hear on Spanish radio stations, and what most students want to learn.  These are dances that originated in Latin American  and Caribbean countries.  Salsa,  bachata, merengue, cha-cha, rumba, and samba are the most popular.  There are many many others.  Popularity depends on where you are.

LYRICAL

Began as a dance genre that combined Ballet technique and Jazz movement. It focuses on choreography that sees the dancers dance to the lyrics- in both their sound delivery and meaning / interpretation.

MUSICALS

Is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

TAP

Tap is characterized by sharp, musical sounds created by the feet of a dancer wearing shoes with metal plates attached to the heels and toes. Today it seems that Tap dancers are ‘coming out of the woodwork’ to show off their insane rhythmic capabilities and bringing Tap into the 21st century.
